It’s almost Thanksgiving, but before we enter the holiday season in earnest, we have one more treat for you in 2015. The fare we serve will not be fowl, but a much more disturbing meal. Come with us and see what dark imaginings our authors dish out.

Stephen Jay Schwartz – Los Angeles Times Bestselling Author Stephen Jay Schwartz spent a number of years as the Director of Development for Wolfgang Petersen where he worked to develop screenplays for production.
His two novels, Boulevard and Beat, follow the journey of sex-addicted LAPD detective Hayden Glass.
Stephen was a judge for the 2012 Edgar and ITW Awards, and is currently judging the mystery-thriller section for the Los Angeles Book Prize. His work will be included in a short story collection with T.C. Boyle, to be published by Red Hen Press in 2016.

Chrome Oxide – A few years ago, because of inadequate discouragement, Chrome Oxide started writing twisted science fiction and fantasy short stories. Since he started writing he has been torturing the Orange County Science Fiction Writers Orbit by learning two bad habits for every one he fixed. He has contributed a short piece to each of their annual chapbooks since 2012. He even managed to get a short story published in volume 29 of the Writers of the Future. He so enjoys writing that even when he is recording bands in clubs he can be found with a microphone in one hand and a manuscript to be edited in the other. Because one of his first submitted stories was accepted, he has been collecting rejection slips to make up for that. Details of his career, such as it is, can be found at his author site, www.chromeoxide.com/writer/

Shades & Shadows is at Long Beach Comic Con!
We’ve been working under the cover of darkness, in secret lairs and hidden alcoves, and are proud to announce that Shades & Shadows will be presenting not just one event, but an entire day’s worth of content on Saturday, September 12th!
Body Issues in Genre Fiction

Genre fiction offers authors interesting and exciting ways to explore the idea of difference in terms of bodies and the construction of masculinity and femininity, and it only gets weirder when nonhumans get thrown into the mix! In this panel, we’ll deconstruct the notion of “normal” bodies.
Panelists: Michael Paul Gonzalez, Cecil Castellucci, Gallagher Lawson, Christa Faust, Sherri L. Smith
Moderator: Samuel Sattin

LGBT Issues in Genre Fiction

How many main characters in genre fiction can you name who land somewhere on the LGBT spectrum of identities? Let’s tackle issues of representation in real life and on the page. In worlds where anything is possible, how can we use the tools of genre fiction to create a more inclusive universe?
Panelists:  Martin Pousson, Sheri Lewis Wohl, Maureen McHugh, Gallagher Lawson, Sean Abley
Moderator: Xach Fromson

The Controversy of Sexual Violence in Genre Fiction
Is it just us, or is there a whole lot of violence against women being portrayed across all mediums of genre fiction? When one in three women will experience violence in their lives, how do we break silence and reflect the reality of women everywhere in a way that is respectful?
Panelists: Samuel Sattin, Maria Alexander, Michael Paul Gonzalez, John Skipp, Mere Smith, Heather Lyons

Moderator:Lauren Candia

Featuring readings by:

KIT REED – Born into a Navy family, Kit Reed moved so often as a kid that she never settled down in one place, and she doesn’t know whether that’s a good thing or not. It’s a very good thing in its relationship to her new novel, WHERE, in which the entire population of a small island vanishes overnight. Even they don’t know WHERE. Her fiction covers territory variously labeled speculative fiction/science fiction/literary fiction, with stops at stations in between that include horror, dystopian SF, psychothrillers and black comedy, making her “transgenred.” In case you were wondering what kind of WHERE really is.

IAN WELKE’s short stories have appeared in KZine, Big Pulp, Zombie Jesus and Other True Stories, and the American Nightmare anthology amongst others. His first novel, The Whisperer in Dissonance, was published by Omnium Gatherum Media in 2014. His second novel, End Times at Ridgemont High was published this April.

Before writing full time, Ian was lucky enough to work at Blizzard Entertainment and at Runic Games. These days, when he’s not at his desk writing, Ian enjoys a variety of games. His favorites tend to be elaborate board games with many pieces and rules to confuse, though he’s  happiest going mad with his characters in the Call of Cthulhu RPG.

As you no doubt noticed, our home page is a big ass plea for funding.

No, this is not an April Fool’s joke. This is real. The plea is real, and the benefits are real.

Shades & Shadows, Inc. is currently a Public Benefit Corporation, which means we have to demonstrate actions we have taken in the public good. With every show we put on, one of our aims is to help keep up the appeal of reading, namely by reminding people that reading can be fun, and can have monsters, aliens, murderers, spaceships, and everything else in our imaginations. But we want to take it one step further. We want Shades & Shadows to have nonprofit protections so that every single cent we put in gets turned back around as more cool stuff for you, and for people like you.

So, what do you get out of it? Well, for starters, a book! Donate in any amount of $10 or more, and we’ll send you something amazing: A portal into worlds you haven’t yet imagined, full of endless wonder. But past that, there are tons of things you could see once we have our nonprofit status. We could start doing shows at college campuses, or in partnership with other nonprofits. We could apply for grants that would let us bring out big name authors from across the globe to lend their support to a debuting author who would get a huge boost in visibility. We could have a presence at conventions, promoting the value of reading the books before they become movies or HBO series. The list goes on. All of it, every single bit, can only happen with your help.

So please, contribute out in any amount. Nothing goes unnoticed or unappreciated.

Give us your money? Please?

April Fundraiser!

We’ve been quietly working on this for awhile, but we’re excited to announce that Shades & Shadows will be launching a new podcast beginning with our March 2015 show!

Making our shows available as a podcast means that you can enjoy discovering new authors, or hearing your favorite authors read, no matter where you are! Missed a show? Catch up on old episodes! Want to tell your friends about us? Now they can get a taste of what our live shows include by listening to our shows. Of course, nothing compares to being there in person, but not everyone lives in Los Angeles (despite what traffic here would make one think).

Stay tuned for more information on when episodes will be posted!
