Beware the Ides of March!

Well, perhaps not “beware,” but look forward to the day. Saturday, March 15th, we’re bringing you an all-new lineup of authors. And we want you to join us! Yes, et tu.

Zack Morrissette has been called a hack, not a real artist and a lousy dancer. However, his first novel, The Other Side of the Fence, co-written by Steve Nixon, won Indie Book of the Day on indiebookoftheday.com and has 5 stars on Amazon. Zack’s been interviewed by geeksmash.com and thegeekgirlproject.com. He also draws a daily comic of exquisite nerd humor on Twitter and Instagram @zackmorrissette. S.P. Hendrick is the author of two acclaimed fantasy series, The Glastonbury Chronicles and Tales Of The Dearg-Sidhe. A third companion, The Glastonbury Archives in the works, along with a deck of Tarot cards based on Celtic mythology, British folklore, and the worlds and characters she has created. Ms Hendrick holds a degree in English from the former San Fernando Valley State College (now California State University, Northridge). During the mid 1960s or as she puts it “in a past life” under the nom de plume Jennifer Starkey she did publicity for several rock bands and was a columnist for a national magazine. Her first novel under that name, Sunset Offramp was published during that era. She lives in the San Fernando Valley with her husband Jay T. Mayer, entirely too many cats, and thirty-two overflowing bookcases.

Nina Berry is a writer, redhead, and bodysurfer. She writes all kinds of things, including the paranormal OTHERKIN trilogy from KTeen and the historical thriller PAGAN JONES series from Harlequin Teen, debuting in 2015. Becket is the personal assistant to international best-selling author ANNE RICE. He has a BA in music composition, an MA in systematic theology, and an MS in Industrial/Organizational Psychology. Chiwan Choi is a partner at Writ Large Press. He is also the author of Abductions and The Flood.

Cherisse Yanit-Nadal is a 2013 recipient of PAWA, Inc.’s Manuel G. Flores Writing Prize, and a 2013 VONA/Voices Fellow. She earned her baccalaureate degrees in English and music and her master’s degree in Rhetoric and Composition. She is currently in attendance at The University of California at Riverside – Palm Desert for an MFA in Creative Writing. She writes as the West Coast Correspondent for DC Asian Pacific American Film, Inc. Her fiction has appeared in the Berkeley-based Oatmeal Magazine.

Until then, check us out at the San Gabriel Valley Literary Festival!  Saturday, February 8, 2014 from 1:40pm – 2:00pm, a mini-presentation of Shades & Shadows will darken the stage of the dA Center for the Arts in the Pomona Arts Colony.

Our readers:

LAUREN CANDIA is the co-creator of the Shades & Shadows Reading Series. She holds a B.A. in Women’s Studies and Ethnic Studies from UC Riverside, and proudly claims the feminist title. When not planning literary events, she writes creepy stories and is currently working on her first YA novel.

JUSTIN ROBINSON Much like film noir, Justin Robinson was born and raised in Los Angeles. He splits his time between editing comic books, writing prose, and wondering what that disgusting smell is. Degrees in Anthropology and History prepared him for unemployment, but an obsession with horror fiction and a laundry list of phobias provided a more attractive option.

LILLIAM RIVERA is a 2013 PEN Center USA Emerging Voices Fellow and a 2013 Enchanted Land Fellow at A Room of Her Own Foundation. Her work has appeared or is forthcoming in Bellevue Literary Review, The Rumpus.net, Los Angeles Review of Books, Writers Tribe Review Spring 2013, Antioch University’s Lunch Ticket, Sucker Literary, and Latina. Driving Directions:

To get to the Pomona Arts Colony from the Los Angeles area, take the 10 Freeway East past the 57 Freeway and exit on Garey Avenue.

From the 10 Freeway East, turn right on Garey.  From the 10 Freeway West, turn left on Garey.  In about 2 miles, you will pass under a railroad bridge.  Take the next right if it’s early in the evening (before 6).  If it’s later, you might want park on the other side of Garey and walk over, heading west.
The dA Center is on Main Street, which runs parallel to Garey.  There is both street and $3 pay parking nearby on both sides of Garey Avenue.

January 18th Show

We’re coming back with more dark fiction to send shivers up your spines in the cold harshness of a January night. This show marks our transition to Saturday nights as well, so plan accordingly.

Martin Pousson was born and raised in the bayou land of Acadiana. His novel, No Place, Louisiana, was published by Riverhead Books and was a finalist for the John Gardner Fiction Book Award. His collection of poetry, Sugar, was a finalist for the Lambda Literary Award. His short stories were awarded a National Endowment for the Arts Creative Writing Fellowship in 2014. The stories have been published in numerous journals and reviews including Epoch, StoryQuarterly, Parnassus, The Rattling Wall, Cimarron Review, and New Orleans Review. He is working now on a story collection called Black Sheep Boy.

Travis Sentell was named one of the top thirty new writers under thirty by Random House in 2006, and was included in their bestselling publication,Twentysomething Essays by Twentysomething Writers: Best New Voices of 2006.
He has published work in such diverse places as the Berkeley Fiction Review, the award-winning collection Silent Voices, and the cult-journal Ampersand Review. His first novel, SINergy, was recently optioned for the screen with Mark Ordesky (Lord of the Rings trilogy) set to produce, and Jim Uhls (Fight Club) attached to write. His book, In the Shadow of Freedom (Atria, 2010) received positive reviews in over 200 newspapers nationwide, including the New York Times.

Benzon Ray Barbin is a writer and photographer from San Diego, California. Ever since he was a kid, he has loved science-fiction and fantasy. Aside from the staples of Star Wars and Star Trek, Japanese anime like Macross and the video game series Final Fantasy inspired him to write. Benn has an interest in intelligent, action-oriented stories. He is currently trying to get his novel, Reflections of Destiny published. When he’s not teaching English online or photographing, he enjoys listening to indie/electronic music on vinyl with his girlfriend Mary and drinking coffee from a French press. He has a love for football and will be disappointed when the season is over. He holds a B.A. in English from National University and an M.F.A. in Creative Writing from UC Riverside. Martin Lastrapes is a novelist and his debut novel, Inside the Outside, won the Grand Prize at the 2012 Paris Book Festival. He grew up in the Inland Empire, studied at Cal State San Bernardino, has a Bachelor’s Degree in English and a Master’s Degree in Composition. LARA PARKER is best known for playing the role of Angelique on the cult television show Dark Shadows. She is also the author of three DARK SHADOWS novels: WOLF MOON RISING, THE SALEM BRANCH and ANGELIQUE’S DESCENT.

She grew up In Memphis, Tennessee, graduated from Central High School, attended Vassar College and received her BA from Southwestern at Memphis (now Rhodes College) majoring in Philosophy. She did all her course work on a Masters in Drama at the University of Iowa before leaving for New York City where she began working as a professional actress.

She received her MFA in Creative Writing from Antioch University at Los Angeles, and she is also an adjunct professor teaching Freshman English at Santa Monica College. STEVEN CALCOTE has lived and worked in China throughout his career as a filmmaker. His first documentary took viewers on a modern journey into the ancient world of Chinese Jews, an intense project he later counterbalanced by telling the story of China’s biggest ice cream manufacturer. Since then he’s continued to push the geographical and technological boundaries of filmmaking around the world, directing projects for diverse clients ranging from Boeing to Nickelodeon.

THE READERS:

CHRIS FARNSWORTH was born and raised in Idaho, where he worked as an investigative and business reporter for several years, before selling his first script, THE ACADEMY, to MGM. He is also the writer of the Nathaniel Cade series, about a vampire who works for the President of the United States. The books, BLOOD OATH, THE PRESIDENT’S VAMPIRE, and RED, WHITE, AND BLOOD, are available now from G.P. Putnam’s Sons.

COBURN HAWK went to an art school, stumbled into the film business where he ended up doing pyrotechnics and weapons handling, successfully got OUT of the film business (harder then getting in) and found himself in technology, where he now works as a Director of User Experience. In his first novel THE MIDDLE MAN, he chose to rewrite the afterlife and explore the question “who runs purgatory?” He is currently writing book two in the series THE THREE KEYS …The “Knotted Circle” series is at least a trilogy, probably more like five books…

STEVEN-ELLIOT ALTMAN is a bestselling SciFi author of such novels as DEPRIVERS, ZEN IN THE ART OF SLAYING VAMPIRES and THE KILLSWITCH REVIEW. He’s also written comic books like THE IRREGULARS and video games such as 9DRAGONS. His most recent runaway success is the Facebook game PEARL’S PERIL. He pitches left, bats right.

GRETCHEN McNEIL is an opera singer, writer and clown. She has three novels, POSSESS, TEN, and 3:59, with GET EVEN and GET DIRTY coming out in 2014 and 2015, respectively.

ROSS HELFORD is a produced screenwriter, Black Belt in Kenpo Karate, trombonist, long-time practitioner of Kundalini Yoga, and teacher. Also, he is nearly finished earning an MFA in creative writing from UC Riverside’s low-residency Palm Desert program.

We’ve taken some advice to heart and will be making a few tweaks and changes to our show, making it stronger and better, and we’ve begun planning our November event! Keep an eye out for the information!
